Maryam Aziz

Maryam Aziz is a first-year doctoral student and Rackham Graduate School Merit Fellow in the Department of American Culture at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on martial arts as used by 20th century, American social movements. In her undergraduate, honors thesis, completed at Columbia University, she used the Black Arts Movement text Black Fire as an interpretative lens for reading the performance, rhetoric, and political actions of martial artists as Black Power activism. Currently, she is working on a Black martial artist oral history project and researching the radical potential of martial spaces in Black and Latino communities.
