Christopher R. Matthews is Lecturer in sociology of sport and Course Leader of the BA (Hons.) Sports Studies degree at the University of Brighton, UK. He completed his PhD at Loughborough University, UK under the supervision of Professor Joseph Maguire. His research has focused on boxing, mixed martial arts and men’s health. He is currently conducting projects exploring Brazilian jiu jitsu, drug use in boxing and the maintenance of gender inequality in the workplace. He is also the book review editor for NORMA: The International Journal of Masculinity Studies. He began boxing as part of an ethnographic study in 2008 and continues to be actively involved in the sport.
