Martin Minarik was born in 1986 in Bratislava, former Czechoslovakia, and raised near Bielefeld, Germany. He studied Theater-, Film-, and Media Studies, Philosophy, East-Asian Studies, and History in Bielefeld and Vienna. He earned his Magister Philosophiae with his thesis ‘Taekwondo as Cultural Performance – Chances and Dangers of Theatric Performance Art’, which was also published by Promedia in 2014 under the title ‘Taekwondo between Spectaculum and Ritual – Martial Arts in Social and Political Context’. Since 2002, he practices Kukki-Taekwondo and currently holds a 2nd Dan. Besides his academic and sportive involvement with martial arts, he also practices martial arts as theatrical performance art. In his most recent engagement 2013/14, he was part of the martial arts ensemble in the production Maria Stuart (director: Stefan Müller) at the Volkstheater in Vienna.
