Season’s Updates

merry-kickmas

I hope you are all very well. I just want to give you a quick update about some of the things that have been going on in my corner of the martial arts studies world.

1. Conferences

We have seen some great conferences and events this year. The conference in Cardiff was a great success, as were the martial arts studies conferences in Germany, Korea and Japan.

Next summer’s martial arts studies conference in Cardiff is scheduled for 11-13 July, and this time it will have an exclusive focus on Bruce Lee’s cultural legacies.

I don’t like to wish my life away, but I’m already very excited about this. There has been a lot of interest in it, from all over the world. If you want to attend or give a paper, check out the instructions here.

We’ll be working on pricing and registration in due course. Please bear with me.

2. Grants

I’ve been really busy recently trying to complete grant applications for further martial arts studies projects. It’s been a slog, but if all goes well, I could have funding to hold three significant UK-based martial arts studies events over the next couple of years.

In addition, I’ve applied for funding to establish a Cardiff Universities Martial Arts Studies Research Network. I’m not sure when I’ll hear the outcome of that application, but if it goes through Cardiff will become even more of a hotbed of martial arts studies activity than it already is!

At the time of writing, I am still in the thick of applying for yet another grant. This is for a research assistant to help me plumb the depths of martial arts culture in the UK.

3. Publications

The next big publication is likely to be issue five of Martial Arts Studies, which is coming together really well. It’s going to be a great issue, but I don’t want to give away too much too soon.

I am also excited to learn that the German DVS have announced their own new journal – JoMAR, a Journal of Martial Arts Research. I look forward to reading more!

Finally, in 2018, we should be seeing some significant new monographs appearing in the Martial Arts Studies Book Series from Rowman & Littlefield International.

4. For Christmas…

For Christmas I have asked for a revamped and professionally redesigned website for the Martial Arts Studies Research Network. This should be coming soon, hopefully in the New Year at the latest. So this is your last chance to see the old site…

5. New Year’s Resolutions

If you are interested in any of the above, why not resolve to act on it: maybe apply to give a paper at the conference, consider writing up your research into an article for the journal, or maybe even as a monograph…?
